Three steps to a perfect family Christmas

The perfect family Christmas is much like the perfect cake. There's a lot of layers to it, and it's always only one violently slammed [oven] door away from collapsing.

That's why we decided to put together a little list of how to do family Christmas just right, for first timers and old timers alike...

#3 Respect family traditions

Singing round the piano, making rum sauce but buying brandy butter, and having goose rather than turkey. Traditions aren't always continued for a reason, but that's not the point. When Grandma demands a specific brand of mince pie or Uncle gets the guitar out, they don't do it out of practicality. They do it because by sharing family traditions and rituals, we all become closer to each other.

Unless the tradition is opening presents AFTER dinner. You can definitely scrap that.

#2 Talk to everyone

Yes we know your siblings might be the most fun, and Uncle Gerald's latest survey of local mesozoic strata might not lead to the most raucous laughter, but you should talk to Uncle Gerald anyway (besides, he probably feels the same way about you). For most of us, family Christmas is one of the few times every year when immediate and extended family are all together. Get to know them: after all, they're relatives/married relatives so they won't be that different, and you can learn something new.

This rule definitely extends to plus ones - anyone who's left their own family Christmas to be at yours is obviously in love, so show them some appreciation.

#1 Always remember: you're part of a team

Family is always your number one team, and at a family Christmas it's very important you remember that. Like all good teams, they work best when they work together to each other's strengths. Yes, mum might be the best cook in the house, but that doesn't mean she can't do with some help. Yes, dad might insist he has the lights sorted, but hold the ladder/go outside to keep him company anyway. Yes, you might be in charge of setting the table, but accept some help if it will make other relatives feel better.

Follow these steps and you are guaranteed a great family Christmas. If you'd like to encourage some more teamwork during the festive season, then check out our great personalised shirts, sweatshirts, and hoodies:
